IBM’s First Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor Brings Arm Technology to Z and LinuxONE

As the first product of the companies’ new partnership, the next-generation processor will vastly expand software options on the mainframe

The next generation of IBM Z and LinuxONE servers will give enterprises access to a wider software ecosystem as it brings Arm architecture to the mainframe. 

IBM announced its first dual-architecture mainframe processor Aug. 24 at Hot Chips 2026. The new design combines IBM Z or LinuxONE workloads with Arm-native workloads, side-by-side on the same chip. 

“By doing so, we will bring mainframe capabilities like performance, scale, and extreme reliability to ARM-based software, enabling our clients to run ARM applications directly adjacent to their most critical data and transaction systems, providing less friction and more flexibility,” Christian Jacobi, IBM Fellow and CTO of IBM Systems Development, said in a briefing prior to the public announcement. 

The new processor is the first product to emerge from a partnership between IBM and Arm that began in April 2026. By joining forces with the technology licensor, IBM is embracing an ecosystem with more than 22 million developers worldwide, offering applications from cloud to edge, with a heavy focus on compute for AI infrastructure providers. 

Arm’s IP portfolio underpins many key cloud services from the likes of AWS, Google and Microsoft, noted Eddie Ramirez, VP of go-to-market for Arm’s cloud AI business unit. The power of the Arm ecosystem, he said, “is that we allow for differentiation and different design points, but yet we have commonality to the software developers so that they can deploy software across a variety of these solutions, across a variety of cloud providers, or even across servers that are now being deployed on-prem.”

And now, IBM Z can be added to that list of technology partners. “It really is going to be able to help us expand the ecosystem in places that we just haven’t been able to have similar traction before,” Ramirez said. 

The newly announced 11-core, 2 nm node chip will be able to natively execute either IBM Z or LinuxONE software alongside Arm software, switching between execution modes in a matter of nanoseconds, according to Jacobi.  “This is not putting two different core types onto the same chip or some type of emulation,” he said, “but rather integration of the ARM ISA (instruction set architecture) directly into the mainframe cores.” 

Based on IBM’s typical mainframe release cadence, enterprises can expect the dual-architecture design to be available in about two years.
