Women of COBOL Celebrates International Women’s Day
Since 2021, the Women of COBOL video series has been uncovering and overcoming unconscious biases about COBOL and women in technology.
What inspired the series? Moderator Misty Decker, director of worldwide AMC product marketing at OpenText (formerly Micro Focus), says, “I have been in the mainframe ecosystem for 30 years now. Over the years, I’ve been struck by how the majority of conversations in ‘women in technology’ sessions were more about what it’s like to be a woman, and less about their technical skills.” Decker also sought to remind people that “COBOL is not an old, tired programming language—none of that is true. I am on a mission to bring the truth to light.” And so, the Women of COBOL series began.
For the past five episodes, Decker has been joined by women of all walks in their COBOL journeys—from instructors and students to software engineers to salespeople. The thing they all share in common: a desire to dispel the myths about COBOL and highlight the women working with and advancing the language. Guests have discussed topics like education, modernization, diversity, training and more.
